Some fans of U2 may not realize it, but the band actually started out with a spiritual feel. Lead singer, Bono, recently took part in a short film with Eugene Peterson, who wrote a book titled, “The Message: The Bible In Contemporary Language”. Bono is a fan of The Message and has praised Peterson for his work. In the film, Bono talks about how he thinks a lot of modern Christian music feels dishonest to him.
“I think it’s a shame because these are people who are vulnerable to God in a good way . . . porous, open . . . I would love [to] inspire people who are writing these beautiful voices, Gospel songs. Write a song about their bad marriage, write a song about how they’re pissed off at the government. That’s what God wants from you . . . that truth . . . I’m suspicious of Christians because of this lack of realism. I’d love to see more of that in art and in life and in music.” -Bono
